remove lots of nasty code and just use new comment_save(). this is untested but i just couldn't bear to look at the nastiness any longer. bug reports are appreciated.
next up: clean up mailhandler_node_submit() to just use node_submit() instead of custom validation. i hope someone beats me to this. i am not planning to start soon.

This patch moves the changes in comment_post between 4.5 and 4.6 to
mailhandler.
It also makes the user swicth more robust to work with external modules
(listhandler)
It fixes a bug where base64 and other encoded text would not be
converted to utf-8.

This patch does the following:
1. adds an email filter to prettify email conversations;
2. adds a node format selector to the mailhandler admin page to facilitate prettification;
3. adds a field for extra IMAP commands necessary for some mail servers (e.g. notls, novalidate-cert etc.);
4. respects message encoding to fix issues with i18n characters in email subject, from address, and body;
5. moves the call to mailhandler_switch_user() to after the call to the _mailhander hook to allow other modules (especially the listhandler) to create new users;
6. fixes comment creation issue with drupal_goto();
7. adds a separate mailhandler.css style sheet for mail formatting.

updated mailhandler_node_submit() so it uses new functions like node_validate(). now does more consistent validation and access control ... also sends better error replies when a submission fails.

Patched to use menu() instead of menu_add().
Moved admin stuff into the modules section. I think all modules should behave like this. It makes life much more hierarchical and nice.

- Updated the modules in the contributions repository to use
'theme("function")' instead of '$theme->function()'. Hopefully I didn't
break anything. If I did, let me know.
The following modules need special attention (but should still work as is):
1. The ldap_integration directory has its own user.module; I haven't updated
the documentation bit that talks about themes.
2. The hotlist module uses '$theme->hotlist_del_icon'. Should be avoided
and somehow wrapped in a (larger) call to theme().
3. The image module has its own way of doing what 'theme()' does (or the
former 'theme_invoke()'). Constructs like the one below (a) look wrong
and (b) should be rewritten to properly use 'theme()'. For example:
$theme->box("foo", method_exists("bar") ? $theme->bar() : $bar);
Search for "image_gallery_album", "image_gallery_home" and
"image_thumb_browser". I've already changed '$theme->box()' to
'theme()'.
4. The sidebar module uses '$theme->foreground' and '$theme->background'.
Should be avoided and somehow wrapped in a (larger) call to theme().
5. The org_informations module uses '$theme->separator()', which is new to
me.
6. The taxonomy_filter module uses '$theme->taxolist_filter_item()'. It
should use 'theme("taxolist_filter_item")' instead. I haven't changed
it because it would probably fail to resolve the default function if
not overridden by a theme.
7. The taxonomy_dhtml module's INSTALL file still talks about
'$theme->image'.
8. The xloadtree module's INSTALL file still talks about '$theme->image'.
9. I haven't updated the style.module; too many $theme's, though I don't
think it needs any updates.
[I'll try to update the sandboxes later on.]

Made compatible with listhandler. Nodes are no longer passed by reference.
Modules using the mailhandler hook need to return $node in order to allow
for further processing if desired.

- mailhandler will now consider email aliases if mailalias.module is installed.
- Admins may now choose to use the HTML or the plain text parts of multi-part email. Accepting HTML email is great because users can compose their post in their WYSIWYG mail client (e.g. Outlook, Mozilla, etc.).

fixed small bug for submissions without a MID or references header.
Also, I found out that we use featuresof ltrim() and rtrim() which were added in PHP 4.1. This is easily worked around if necessary.

Gerhard contributed IMAP and Folder support. Folders do not only work with procmail but with any programm that supports them.
Folders are untested "but should work."
IMAP seems to connect to the mailbox fine but the imap_body() function in line 25 is failing for me every time. If anyone has an IMAP server and the desire to debug this, I'd appreciate it.
If you are upgrading an existing version of mailhandler, this commit requires a small SQL change to the mailhandler table. See the final 2 lines of mailhandler.mysql

These enhancements bring us very close to a bidirectional email<->web framework.
I'm thinking that project.module will be the first heavy user of the this framework. Then, we'll do a listserv application.

The Mailhandler module allows registered users to post new nodes via email. Authentication is usually based on the From: email address. Users may post taxonomy terms, teasers, and other node parameters using the Commands capability.
This module aspires to become the universal email handler for Drupal. An interesting overview of its capabilities may be read at http://www.tejasa.com/module.php?mod=mailhandler&op=help.
Mailhandler supercedes Blogmail.module which is now obsolete.
This form allows you to request diffs between any two revisions of this file.
For each of the two "sides" of the diff,
select a symbolic revision name using the selection box, or choose
'Use Text Field' and enter a numeric revision.
